Dr. Richard Amaral, Psychologist

Dr. Richard Amaral is a registered psychologist in Markham, Ontario working with adolescents, adults, and families. His goal is to help clients overcome any mental, emotional, and behavioural obstacles that are preventing them – and their family – from reaching their full potential. He utilizes evidence-based practices to provide clients with tools and strategies to use in their day-to-day life.

Dr. Amaral’s training is in the areas of CBT (cognitive-behavioural therapy), psychodynamic therapy (developing insight and meaning from interpersonal relationships), hypnotherapy (using suggestion to create change and insight), and EMDR (eye-movement desensitization reprocessing). Ultimately, the goal of every session is to create a safe, comfortable, non-judgemental working relationship where clients can openly discuss anything they’d like.

  • Addictions (to drugs and other behaviours like gambling)
  • Anxiety (constantly worrying about things)
  • Anger Management (feeling like you have a 'short fuse or temper')
  • Depression (sad, disinterested, finding difficulty being motivated)
  • Domestic violence (helping people heal from all forms of abuse)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (helping people resolve past and current traumas)

Dr. Amaral is also an approved provider with Health Canada for First-Nations people, having worked in First Nations communities for over five years.

EDUCATION

Dr. Amaral received his Ph.D. from the University of Calgary in applied psychology, specializing in counselling. He received a Master of Arts degree in counselling psychology from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon and specialized in adolescents and addictions. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Toronto at Mississauga where he completed an honours degree in philosophy and psychology. Dr. Amaral has over 15-years of experience in providing counselling and psychotherapy services.
